Dermaplaning: What It Is, Benefits and Precautions

Dermaplaning is one of the skincare topics we are asked about most. Here is what it is, what it can do and what precautions to take.
What is it? It is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a special tool, such as a scalpel or blade, to remove the top layers of the skin (Cleveland Clinic, 2022).
Benefits. It may help reduce the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles and dull skin, and leave the skin smoother (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Some people also use it to remove hair, but the effect is temporary because the hair grows back (Cleveland Clinic, 2022).
Risks. Although it is generally considered safe, it can cause infection, scarring (such as keloids or raised scars) and changes in skin color (Cleveland Clinic, 2022).
Who should ask first? People with active acne, cold sore outbreaks, eczema, moles, freckles, skin tags or other skin growths, psoriasis, burns (for example, from radiation therapy) or rashes (contact dermatitis) should talk with their healthcare provider first (Cleveland Clinic, 2022).
Who performs it? According to Cleveland Clinic (2022), it can be done by a plastic surgeon, a dermatologist or a cosmetologist. In Florida, the Board of Cosmetology regulates cosmetologists, facial specialists and other beauty professionals (Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, n.d.). Before offering any service, confirm what your license or registration covers.
After the treatment. Protect your skin from the sun with a broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, water-resistant sunscreen (American Academy of Dermatology, 2025).
